Students will be identifying and comparing various polygons and sorting them by their geometric properties i.e. number of sides, side length, number of inside angles, number of right angles).
Sample Question: Compare a number of 4-side shapes (quadrilaterals). How are they the same?  How are they different?

* We are beginning our next strand of math: Geometry and Spatial Sense. Students will compare two-dimensional shapes and sort them by their geometric properties. Sample question: Use a reference tool (e.g., paper corner) to identify right angles and to describe angles as greater than, equal to, and less than a right angle.

Answer: 90, 770, 230, 360, 400, 810.

Sample activities: Ask your child to determine the value of a collection of quarters using the strategy skip count by 25, and, ask your child to count backward by 100's, beginning at 987 and ending at 0.

Each block is given a value of either 1000, 100, 10 or 1. Then the value of the entire picture is calculated.

Have your child look in newspapers or on the Internet for stories with numbers that are greater than 10 and less than 100 and are written out in words. What do those numbers represent? How would you write them in standard form ie Forty (word form), 40 (standard form).

We had a very busy, but very enjoyable first day back to school!

Over the next few weeks, the students will be learning about each other and will be familiarizing themselves with our classroom expectations and routines. I have also been enjoying getting to know my new students.
